Detection Circuit

The camera has three modes of operation: IR triggered camera, Time-lapse plot camera, and plot camera by day/ infrared camera at night. In the IR triggered camera mode it take photos when detects a motion. It has a trigger speed of 1.5 seconds that is fast enough to take photos without fail. In the time lapse mode it captures photos continuously just after the delay time set by the user.

Its delay setting ranges from 15 seconds to 60 minutes. In the 3rd mode, we can adjust the time for which it works as an IR triggered camera and Time-lapse plot camera. The camera is good at detection, it merely misses any shot. Recovery time of the camera is just 6 seconds.

The camera has a 50 degrees  wide view field and 40 feet of detection range while the flash is capable of illuminating objects up to the distance of 60 feet.

Irrespective of the specification, in our test it is found that the camera misses some shot also it takes many shots with nothing in it. Hence I’m giving it just 3.5 out of 5.

Picture Quality

The picture quality of the M-80 is impressive. Although it is just 5 mega pixel camera but it lives up to the expectation. It takes 16:9 widescreen photos and videos. It claims to have an illumi- night sensor. I don’t know what it is; but surely it makes the night time photos bright and clear.

Battery and Power Options

The camera can be powered by 8 AA batteries or 12 volt DC supply. Since it uses the AA batteries, so we are free to use AA sized alkaline battery or rechargeable Ni-Cd battery. The camera does not come with any battery. You will have to purchase batteries separately.

Type and Features

The camera support up to 32 GB of SD card but it doesn’t support Wi-Fi SD card. The flash range of the camera is pretty good. It uses Low glow IR LED flash and illumi- night sensor for bright and sharp night time pictures.

Ease of use

M-80 doesn’t have a LCD display to view images but it does have a 2 x 16 character LCD display which shows date and time information. It is very easy to operate as it comes with slider switches.

Moultrie game spy M- 80 infrared 5.0 MP mini digital trail camera is one of the best entry level trail camera available in the market. It is also available with 1 year warranty, you can claim for it if the camera stops working.

The camera will be repaired or replaced, whichever be convenient for the manufacturer. The camera has very few disadvantages, including the Red tint from the flash. Also because of illumi- night sensor, when animals are too close to the camera during nights, IR flash will turn them white and animals will be almost invisible in the photos.

But we can’t ignore the several valuable features of the camera and since it is the entry level camera we can’t expect everything. Hence M-80 is worth considering because of its price and features.
