by Allan Lederman

Covert Scouting Cameras MP-E5 Infrared Trail Camera is Covert’s most affordable and easiest to use trail camera. It has excellent battery life which makes it special. Running on eight AA batteries, the Covert MP-E5 is cheap to start and maintain.

Before buying you may check some of the features of this camera as it comes with 4 easy to use pre-set functions, 6 MP photo resolution, 45 feet flash range, 28 red glow LEDs, record videos up to 10 seconds, operates on 8AAs and has 16 GB SD card capacity. One of the exciting features of this camera is that there is a stamp on each photo that records the information of the date, time, moon phase, and temperature.

Key Features

Detection Circuit

The 1.2s trigger speed is pretty typical of this camera in this price range. Recovery time of 36 sec is too long that it is not respectable or competitive recovery time. The detection zone is much wider than the field of view, which results in a number of false triggers when animals are just outside the field of view. Dealing with hundreds and thousands of pictures, it s quite annoying. The camera is capable of detecting animals up to 45 feet.

Overall, detection circuit is not impressive.

Picture Quality

This camera provides you outstanding daytime pictures with depth and good colour quality. It can adapt to different light conditions and can provide you with good results. You can face some blur on movement during the day but clarity is above overall. It does not have big flash for night pictures but still the contrast and clarity is good. The picture quality is fine whether it is a day or night.

Battery and Power options

Power consumption of this camera is really good. The camera operates on 8 AA batteries.  You can use lithium, Ni-Mh rechargeable or even alkaline in the MP-E5.  Battery life will be really good in this little cam as it is with most of the other Covert cams.

Type and Features

The LED lights allow for no flash on the MP-E5 and can take crystal clear pictures from up to 45 feet away. It also is a very small and compact camera that records videos for up to 10 seconds. It supports 28 red glow LEDs. With four easy to use pre-set buttons, this camera is very simple to set up, regardless of your prior experience to trail cameras. It has 6 MP photo resolution. The Camera supports up to 16 GB SD card capacity.

Ease of Use

The camera case is well constructed and easy to use.  It has the threaded insert for a Slate River Mount and the bracket for a Python Cable Lock. The programming options consist of four basic pre-sets:

  • 2 shots - 30 seconds.
  • 2 shots - 1 minute.
  • 3 shots - 5 minute.
  • 10 seconds video - 1 minute.

The programming is easy but it so basic that it limits the cameras effectiveness. You can comfortably handle this camera.
